Frequently Asked Questions
Which Doctor Should You See for Your Child's Teeth?
For children's dental health, a pediatric dentist — also called a pedodontist — is the recommended specialist. Pediatric dentists hold postgraduate specialist or doctoral training focused exclusively on children's oral and dental health, distinguishing them from general dentists who treat patients of all ages. They use child-sized equipment and, because they're trained in child psychology, are more experienced at getting young patients comfortable before and during treatment.
What Is the Oldest Age to See a Pediatric Dentist?
Pediatric dentists treat children from birth through age 15. During this period, the development of both baby teeth and permanent teeth is monitored closely — and problems like cavities or jaw irregularities are caught before they become harder to treat. After age 15, patients are typically transitioned to a general dentist or relevant specialist such as an orthodontist.
When Should My Child Have Their First Dental Visit?
A child's first dental visit should happen when the first baby tooth comes in, or by 12 months at the latest. Many families wait until a tooth hurts or a problem is visible, but that first visit isn't about treatment. It's about making sure you're set up for a lifetime of healthy teeth. The dentist checks for early signs of bottle tooth decay, walks you through brushing and feeding habits that actually make a difference, and spots any jaw or development concerns while they're still easy to address. After the first visit, checkups every six months are recommended.
Is a Pediatric Dentist Different from a General Dentist?
Yes. A pediatric dentist — or pedodontist — is a specialist who has completed advanced postgraduate training focused exclusively on children's oral health from infancy through age 15, making them distinct from a general dentist. That specialization covers how teeth and jaws develop at every stage, not just how to treat problems once they appear. Pediatric dentists are also trained in child psychology, so managing a nervous four-year-old through a checkup without tears is something they do every day. For children who need more support, they can carry out treatment under sedation or general anesthesia when necessary.
Is your clinic easily accessible from Atasehir and Umraniye?
KidsDent Istanbul is located inside the Istanbul Financial Center at Sarphan Finans Park, at the boundary of Ataşehir and Ümraniye. The clinic is a few minutes by car from both neighborhood centers.
What are preventive dentistry applications?
Pediatric dentistry uses five main preventive treatments to stop cavities from developing.
Fissure sealants seal the deep grooves on molar chewing surfaces where decay most commonly starts.
Fluoride varnish strengthens tooth enamel to make it more resistant to acid.
Space maintainers preserve the gap left by a prematurely lost baby tooth, preventing neighboring teeth from shifting and crowding the incoming permanent tooth.
Dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar buildup to protect the gums.
Regular check-ups — typically every six months — use X-rays and examination to catch problems at their earliest, most treatable stage.
What do white spots on children's teeth mean?
White spots on children's teeth indicate one of three distinct conditions.
Early decay, or demineralization, is the most common cause: inadequate brushing allows acid to strip minerals from the enamel, producing a chalky white appearance. This is the earliest stage of a cavity and can be reversed with fluoride treatment and improved brushing before a hole forms.
Dental fluorosis results from excessive fluoride intake during tooth development, typically between ages 0 and 6; it leaves permanent white or yellowish marks on the enamel but does not weaken the tooth structurally.
Hypoplasia occurs when enamel fails to develop fully due to illness or nutritional deficiency during the tooth's formation period. All three conditions look similar to the untrained eye — a pediatric dentist can distinguish between them at a routine visit.
What happens to teeth of children who suck their thumb?
Thumb sucking that continues past ages 3 to 4 can cause lasting structural changes to teeth and jaws.
An open bite develops when front teeth fail to meet even when back teeth are closed, leaving a visible gap. Protrusion occurs when upper front teeth tilt forward — commonly called buck teeth.
Constant thumb pressure on the roof of the mouth causes the upper jaw to narrow and deepen, a condition known as a high palate. As the upper jaw shifts forward, the lower jaw appears set back by comparison. The resulting gap between front teeth also affects speech, producing lisping particularly on S, Z, and T sounds.
Stopping the habit before age 3 significantly reduces the risk of all of these outcomes.
