When decay reaches the nerve of a tooth (the pulp), root canal treatment aims to save the tooth, baby teeth included. Toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, or a swollen gum can be signs.

I graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Dentistry in 2004 and completed the PhD program in the same faculty’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry in 2011. Throughout my doctoral studies and my career in dentistry, I have been interested in the use of new treatments and technologies.
During the seven years I lived in Washington, D.C., and Toronto, I closely followed new treatment approaches and technologies in dentistry.

Which doctor should my child see for their teeth?
For children's dental health, a pediatric dentist — also called a pedodontist — is the recommended specialist. Pediatric dentists hold postgraduate specialist or doctoral training focused on children's oral and dental health. They use child-sized equipment and, because they're trained in child psychology, are more experienced at getting young patients comfortable before and during treatment.
Up to what age does a pediatric dentist see children?
Pediatric dentistry generally covers ages 0 to 13, and that boundary can extend to 16 depending on a child's dental development and cooperation. What decides it is not calendar age but which stage of tooth development the child is in.

The mixed dentition period (when baby and permanent teeth are present together) typically runs from ages 6 to 12 and is the core working range of pediatric dentistry.

Once all permanent teeth have erupted (usually ages 12 to 13), pediatric follow-up may continue for adolescents with high dental anxiety.

Age 14 and above: if there is an unerupted permanent tooth, a retained baby tooth or a jaw development concern, a pediatric dentist's assessment is appropriate.
When Should Babies Have Their First Dental Visit?
A first dental visit should take place within 6 months of the first baby tooth appearing, and by age 1 at the latest. The purpose of this first appointment is not treatment but assessing decay risk and giving guidance on feeding and oral care.

The first visit is short. The dentist checks how many teeth have erupted and in what order, evaluates the lip and tongue ties, and shows the family an age-appropriate brushing technique.

Night-time breastfeeding and bottle-feeding to sleep are the leading causes of early childhood caries (baby bottle tooth decay). Addressing this habit within the first year can prevent most of that decay.

Brushing starts as soon as the first tooth appears, using a soft, small-headed brush and an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Is a Pediatric Dentist Different from a General Dentist?
Yes. Pediatric dentists have completed specialist training in this field. They can identify dental and jaw problems specific to each developmental stage early and, when needed, can carry out treatment under general anesthesia.
What does preventive dentistry for children include?
The main preventive treatments in pediatric dentistry that aim to stop tooth decay are:

Fissure sealants: sealing the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent decay.
